My Story South Walker is a 16-year-old boy from Fayetteville Arkansas with an amazing gift in sculpting. We set up this page to show the world his incredible skills and hopefully help him find his place in the world as a practicing artist or animator. When South was 2 1/2 years old, he did not talk. Doctors suggested hearing tests multiple times, all of which came back normal. South was a sweet, compliant, social kid who made eye contact and had an infectious laugh and big hugs for his family and dogs. He enjoyed playing with trains mostly, collecting sticks and rocks and listening to music and would often try to sing but still not verbal. One evening after a trip to the Tulsa Zoo, which is roughly 2 hours from our home, we stopped at an Italian restaurant to eat dinner before heading back to Fayetteville. South was tired and irritated and about to throw a world class fit when we put him in the highchair. Our young high school age waitress saw the beginnings of what was sure to be a fit for the ages, and asked if she could give him some pizza dough to play with? We agreed, just wanting to enjoy a meal without getting kicked out with an exploding kid. When she handed South the white floury dough, he was mesmerized almost instantly. He rolled it and manipulated it while staying silent. When she brought him a small cheese pizza, he cried and proceeded to roll the dough into a curvy M (the McDonalds Logo) while singing "Buh Buh Buh!" This young lady had no idea, but she opened the door for him to communicate with us. He wanted McDonalds! He ignored the pizza and continued to manipulate the dough. After we paid the bill and left her a sizable tip, we raced to the nearest McDonalds to get him his McNuggets, then stopped at Target for Play-doh™ and a big Tupperware tray with a lid. We headed home to Fayetteville. About 6 months later, South was evaluated and diagnosed with Mild Autism/PDD-NOS. He continued to sculpt figures out of Playdoh™, usually animals, then eventually television characters. SpongeBob was one of the first. South carried the Tupperware tray of Playdoh™ in assorted colors with him almost everywhere. Around the age of 10 someone gave him a box of Crayola™ Model Magic Primary colors as a gift. It is softer and dries without cracking like Playdoh™. For 13 years now, South has honed his craft, he is self-taught and has sculpted thousands of characters, mixing colors, and adding detail in amazing accuracy and speed. He sculpts every piece with his fingers, no tools usually in less than one minute. He only uses Crayola™ Model Magic Primary Colors and white and sometimes black. He only needs a photograph to look at while he sculpts and rarely looks at his hands or fingers…he has an amazing gift and last year he started to share it with the world by creating custom orders and selling them. He does not sell the sculptures that live in his lab. His lab is a space in our home that is where he works. It has two tables, an iPad, a chair and piles of his sculptures. He knows how many there are, where they are, and if one is missing. His bestseller is a Fayetteville High School Bulldog. On Saturdays, South picks out a cast of sculptures and comes up with a story and does a one-hour Claymation class with his teacher Duane Coleman. His wit and quirky sense of humor is very apparent in his movies. South is very loved by his teachers and classmates and just completed his Freshman year at Fayetteville High School where he attends regular education classes in his core subjects and Ceramics, Art, and Drawing. He loves posting his sculptures on his Instagram page "Southssculptures" and following his friends and other artists. Someday South wants to work in an Animation Studio or maybe just be a sculpture with his own gallery covered in his sculptures, selling custom ones made to order.
